On
Tour with Brian Voss
Sun City Classic - El Paso, TX
(Jan. 31 - Feb. 4, 2007 )
El Paso, Texas is a great town. It's our second time at this venue
after skipping it last year. The owner is a former professional baseball
player, so he knows how to take care of the guys. After a miserable
140 start, and seeing my name at the bottom of the list, I just said
what the heck, and switched back to a solid 4 step approach. I then
proceeded to start striking, shooting about 790 the last three games
to jump into the cut. I was using two balls, a Green Alien and a Blue
Alien, and both balls had a good look. After experimenting with 15
pounds last week, I used them the first time in my life for the entire
tournament. I can say, that when you have good hand action, there
was no difference in carry. In fact, I stole a few strikes, tripping
the two pin twice, also a first for me. They weren't real easy out
of the gates, but then became real easy. I ended up qualifying 19th,
Most of the players started around the second arrow, and drifted in
as the day went on. Straighter players played almost exclusively right
up the 8th board. I was paired up against a left hander named Riga
Kalfas. We traded victories the first 4 games, with high scores. He
ended up shooting 258 and 300 the last two games to send me home,
with all hopes of a good tournament vanishing. I was paired next to
Tommy Delutz and Tony Reyes, who I watched both shoot 800 the last
three games, with Reyes winning. The scores were phenomenal during
match play, it ended up being nothing short of a carry contest. I
watched so many errant shots strike, it became a little ridiculous.
But, it seems the authorities think this is the way to do it. Although
I wholeheartedly disagree with it, we are forced to play the hand
that is given to us. But, all in all, it was a moral victory. With
only 6 more tournament left to accumulate points, it was progress,
although only to keep pace, not gain. Have to do better. Wish me luck,
I'm working hard, finally able to practice, but have some catching
up to do. Peace.
