On Tour with Brian Voss

Dick Weber Open - Fountain Valley, CA (Jan. 10 - 15, 2006 )

This weeks tournament featured a retro format, as well as a retro oil pattern. I can say that the "strips: they put out were similar that we used many years ago, but I can also tell you that how they transpired were nothing like years ago. It used to be that the strips held up for a long time, almost forcing players to remain between the strips. But the speed at which they broke down enable players to move inside and throw to the break point. I started out playing just left of the second arrow. Some players started out just left of the third arrow. I didn't bowl great, but did play good enough to cash. Each squad had fresh oil twice and broken down patterns once during qualifying. I was using Scorpions and Aliens on the fresh oil, and Cheetahs on the hooking lanes. I actually ended up playing left of the fifth arrow during the last 4 or 5 games when they broke down. Lefties played just right of their second arrow, and remained there most of the time. In retrospect, no pun intended, I should have used weaker balls and stayed just left of the second arrow most of the time. We are at the half way point in our events, with three majors on the horizon, so it's time to kick things up a notch. See you next week in sunny Phoenix.
