On
Tour with Brian Voss
Mile High Classic - Lakewood, CO
(Nov. 2 - 6, 2005)
During the qualifying round, I was crossing next to Wes Mallott, one
of the hottest bowlers on tour. He was playing a deep inside line,
going from 20 out to about 10. And he was striking a lot. I got fooled
and tried to play the same shot, but that's not my strength, and needless
to say, I didn't fair too well the first round. I was using a Shark,
but the layout wasn't designed to play the lanes that way. After regrouping,
I took out a R47 and scuffed it a bit, and started the second round
out real good, shooting 240, 206, 248, and 226. I like the R47 because
it is a ball that revs up for you, and on a lot of oil, this was good.
I had also noted that some straighter players were scoring well playing
right around the 2nd arrow, Norm Duke, Mike Edwards and a few others,
so I opted to try that. I got myself right back into the thick of
things, and then ran into a bad pair, and everything went wrong, didn't
break up any splits, and couldn't carry, and that bad game took me
right out of things. The lanes got a little wet/dry from the 3rd arrow,
and I took out a Viper, and shot 230 something, but it was a little
too late.
The season is early, there will be many practice games for this author,
and expect some good things to happen soon. Too often players have
something to blame for their results, but the fact is, these are the
best players in the world, and it's time for some hard work. My timing
isn't as good as it could be, but it was a long 6 months off, with
only two tournaments during the off season, so the competitive juices
have been absent. See you all next week.
