On
Tour with Brian Voss
Motel 6 Phoenix Classic - Phoenix,
AZ (Jan. 18 - 22, 2006 )
This weeks pattern was the "Shark", which always plays deep inside.
Players started out playing 4th arrow, and eventually it got to 6th
arrow. It is very common for players to play between 5th and 6th arrow
nowadays. For anybody interested on playing on this tour, you must
learn this. Which also means you have to learn to play in front of
the ball return on the right lane (for right handers). Some players
drift naturally left, and can even drift more left, giving them an
advantage when it comes to playing right lanes. I started the first
game pretty good, using a strong Alien, until the six frame, when
our pair had a break down. We had to wait 10 minutes before the tournament
officials told us we had to move pairs. Getting only 2 balls on each
lane was ample time to warm up, but we didn't have the 15 minutes
you normally get before the first game to break down the pair, and
have a little track to play with. I eventually split twice towards
the end of the first game, which took some momentum out of me. I fought
back and fired a 279 in the 5th game, which got me right back into
it. Then, DJ Armstrong had one of his balls crack, so he decided to
go try and fix it with two frames to go. Another rhythm breaker, but
what's a guy to do. I ended up right around the cut after the first
round. I drilled up another Alien, even stronger, and started out
good the second round, then ran into some split problems. Seemed every
time I made a bad shot, it was a split. Ended up missing the cut by
about 10 pins. All in all, a disappointing week, but still working
hard. We can say goodbye to all of the good weather we've had the
last two weeks. We'll start moving east, then up north. Majors on
the horizon, lot's at stake the next 10 weeks, so stay tuned in to
my progress. I"m working hard.
