Bayer Atlanta Classic - Norcross, GA
(Feb. 1 - 5, 2006 )
Atlanta's shot for the week was the Viper. It played difficult, only
taking about 110 over to make the cut. Most of the good scores came
from left of 4th arrow. Straighter players tried to play around the
9th and tenth board, which was alright until the lanes broke down.
I was using Scorpions for most of the tournament and I played the
lanes both ways during qualifying and also during match play. I had
a lot of splits this week, as did many others. I ended up making the
cut easy, but only after shooting a couple of big games late in the
second round. My good games came either the first two games of the
round playing 10, or when I moved left of 5th arrow. After making
the cut, I was paired against Robert Smith, who bowled really good,
but couldn't carry the ten pin. That match looked more lopsided than
it was, but I advanced, and faced Amleto Monacelli next. I can say
that after my victory the week before, my timing wasn't as sharp.
The week before, it was simply create good ball speed, and try and
stay around the 4th or 5th board. The lanes in Atlanta required much
better shot making, and a lot more imagination. The maximum penalty
was usually paid for with all of the splits. I lost a few games against
Amleto in the 9th and 10th frames, and he ended up beating me 4-2.
I was down 3-0 to him before I finally moved left of the 5th arrow
and made a little comeback by winning the next two games, but he beat
me in the 6th game, and that was that. My kids were with me all week,
so it was a little more busy than normal. Also bowling in my home
center made for a really busy week. But, I made a good appearance,
and satisfied my boys especially by taking them out of school on Friday.
They liked that. The Scorpion that I use when there is a lot of oil,
and I go pretty straight with it is drilled strong, pin just right
of my ring finger and down a little, with an extra hole about an inch
below my axis. The others I used were drilled with the pin above my
fingers, CG slightly below my mid line, and a smaller extra hole.
Good luck if you decide to try these, I love the way they roll. I'll
be in West Virginia next week, trying obviously to win, but focusing
on the US Open a week later. Working hard.
